Food Lion Expands Relationship With ACNielsen

Leading Grocery Retailer Adds Homescan, Retail ACView to Agreement

New Account-Level Information Now Available as Well

1 August 2005
Schaumburg, IL

ACNielsen U.S. today announced a significantly expanded agreement with Food Lion, a leading grocery retailer with more than 1,200 stores across 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic States. Under the new agreement, Food Lion has begun utilizing the ACNielsen Homescan® consumer panel for insights into Food Lion shoppers and Retail ACView for ongoing measurement of the company's market share. In addition, several new Food Lion trade areas are now available.

Food Lion Director of Business Strategy and Analytics Charles Davis said, "Our success is primarily dependent upon how well we serve our shoppers. The ACNielsen Homescan consumer panel will give us additional insights we need to keep our focus as consumer-centric as possible. In addition, Retail ACView will provide us with a highly reliable and accurate process for monitoring our market share within the markets where we compete."

ACNielsen Senior Vice President of Retail Client Service Danny Sacco said, "This is a very important agreement because it moves our relationship with Food Lion from a data exchange relationship to that of a trusted advisor. We are very pleased to see that our efforts to better serve the retail community are paying off, especially with the strong acceptance of Retail ACView, the new gold standard in measuring retailer market share."

Under the agreement, the ACNielsen Homescan consumer panel suite of syndicated tools - including Consumer Facts, Channel Facts, and Account Shopper Profiler - delivers insights into Food Lion's shoppers; Retail ACView provides a web-accessed view of Food Lion's total-store competitive performance, both nationally and within its local markets; Food Lion uses ACNielsen NITRO software to access its point-of-sale data housed in a customized ACNielsen Retail Warehouse Solution and to easily import the data into Microsoft Office documents; and an ACNielsen analyst provides full-time on-site support to Food Lion.

Also under agreement, eight new Food Lion DMA-based trade areas are now available. The new trade areas add to several regional trade areas ACNielsen measures for the benefit of the many manufacturers who sell through Food Lion, helping them manage their sales in the custom geographies where Food Lion competes.
